i believe we are one redondo and that is why i would like to see equitable distribution of the housing and same practices when it comes to zoning. Don’t know why south redondo is never even considered. Their lots located below Torrance Blvd east of pch are bigger than our lots zoned r2 and r3 already yet they are zoned r1. And they are still trying to more density in north. Parking and traffic are horrible as it is. I can’t imagine how long it will take to leave my street in the morning now. I have to wait 20 minutes just to get onto Inglewood in the morning for work as it is when I work 5 minutes away. Lived here 47 years. My neighborhood and the ones directly next to mine are being overwhelmed and truly can not take anymore people. The infrastructure can not absorb anymore. We all keep saying so and no one is listening. Please listen to us. Do a door to door survey to see how the neighborhood feels about the changes. A lot of residents are not aware these changes are coming. Mailers directly to our homes informing us are needed. Please help. Many of my neighbors are elderly and this is how they prefer their notices. This is my home neighborhood and community.

As a 24 year Redondo Beach resident and property owner, I check on the City site for Planning Department updates. Since 2020 was a year of virtual meetings, it was more challenging for residents to keep track of all the meetings and activity by the Commissions and City departments.
I decided to look up Planning this week and found there is a 30 unit Mixed Use Project called Catalina Village that is in the planning stages for a 1.2 acre site 1t 100 - 132 N Catalina Avenue. An Environmental Impact Report is required for this project. Public comments are now being received by the Planner . For details on the project, I recommend residents go to Redondo.org and look under Planning and then check for documents for the project. The real estate development/investment company is Beach City Capital. The web site has renderings and complete details: www.beachcitycapital.com. Watch for this project to go before the Planning Commission by June 2021.
Ms. Healy, no, the residents of whom you speak weren't trying to shine light on any impropriety. They, along with you, personally, were continuing a smear campaign for what appears to be political purposes.
As Council Member Loewenstein stated last week, he will NOT sit idly by while anyone from the public spews falsehoods to disparage others. As Mayor Brand read out loud, another resident had called in to imply wrongdoing related to campaign financing, while she already had, in her possession, a letter from the FPPC denying her claim that she again made verbally last week, as if it had not yet been dismissed as having no merit! The Mayor read that corresponding FPPC letter into the record, providing the factual information to all. And, Council Member Obagi reminded YOU, personally, that as an attorney, you should know better than to continue with such falsehoods, citing the same rhetoric not in factual evidence.
It was further pointed out to you last week that the City is not doing a bid for this work because IT'S NOT A CONTRACT FOR HIRE. It's not a service being paid for by the City for work to implement and maintain a Community Garden! The City would be providing funding only to facilitate the equipment and tools needed to plant a Community Garden for the benefit of the PUBLIC. The South Bay Parkland Conservancy is not being PAID for their work/service. They’re volunteering to run the program as part of their non-profit organization’s mission, and presented a cohesive, thorough, professional program that was well-received and has garnered major support from within the community. There's nothing to BID on!
No one needs to allow such maliciousness to go unabated, unchecked, or unchallenged, be they constituent or elected official. These were not matters of personal opinion being expressed. They were outright lies as part of a sadly misguided smear campaign of an all-volunteer group doing great work for the City, wanting to partner for one or more Community Gardens for public benefit. But here you are again, Ms. Healy, continuing with smear tactics. Why you're not personally embarrassed defies logic.
When residents bring their concerns to an elected body of representatives, especially concerns regarding the appearance of impropriety and conflict of interest, elected officials are expected to address the issues, investigate and/or move forward, not hurl accusations and personal attacks upon the residents who dared to come forward. The First Amendment and our own City Charter protect all Redondo Beach residents’ right to participate in our government, whether you agree with our viewpoint, or not.
When several residents presented facts and concerns about the City partnering with the South Bay Parkland Conservancy at the April 13 meeting, those concerns were not addressed, nor did any of you dispute the facts. Instead, those residents were personally attacked from the dais by Mayor Brand and councilmembers Obagi, Loewenstein and Nehrenheim. Each of you took turns chastising each of the residents personally.
These citizens were trying to shine a light on questionable conduct. They were concerned about the SBPCs lack of financial transparency. The residents were concerned about SBPCs history of raising funds alongside a political action committee and suing the City. The residents were concerned that it was improper for the Mayor to ask for City resources that would support his own non-profit organization in the project. The residents called for a request for proposals or an MOU because that’s what our City usually does before taking on a public-private partnership. The residents and even other council members asked why you were rushing this through and not considering this project with all the other budgetary items that have to be prioritized. ALL of these points…all of these concerns… were valid.
Public service is a public trust. Mayor Brand and councilmembers Obagi, Loewenstein and Nehrenheim, you violate that trust when you use the dais to assassinate the character of anyone who brings you information you don’t wish to hear. You cannot govern well when you refuse to listen to all residents, even those you disagree with. Your privileged position on the dais demands that you encourage all voices to be heard, not punish residents for speaking up.
