Now would be a great time to consider an alternative to an annual fireworks show, such as a laser show instead. Fireworks are not environmentally sound, and do great damage to our eco system, leaving metal particles and dangerous toxins in our air and our ocean. They also cause great distress to animals and many people.

Environmentally conscious cities have found ways to celebrate the fourth of July that do not involve harming animals and people. Unfortunately, tonight’s staff report has not provided you with the various alternatives such as a laser show or drone show. With budget cuts looming, it’s time for the City to celebrate our Independence in a way that demonstrates our commitment to a healthier environment and that takes less of a chunk out of the City’s budget.

This is Jeff Ginsburg and the current President of the Riviera Village Association; I just saw this agenda item and since the RVA has previously requested to have the 4th of July Fireworks barge to be moved in front of Avenue I so the Riviera Village could have a 4th of July event I am wondering if considering the unique circumstances out there this year would this be something the Mayor & City Council would support? Since it looks like the city might cancel the harbor fire works barge show then this could work out to be a "win-win" scenario rather than canceling 4th of July firework entirely for the city? I believe if the city saw how well a fireworks show viewed from all along Esplanade could be to residents that it might become the new location? Also I was told by fireworks experts that the size of the fireworks show in the harbor is very limited due to the proximity of boaters and also that boaters are not allowed to take their boats out while the barge is setup due to safety concerns so having the fireworks on a barge in open water would actually allow for a much larger fireworks show and allow boaters to cruise around as they please as well! If we can get this all approved then it also shouldn't cost the city anything for the fireworks since the barge/fireworks costs would be sponsored! Looking forward to a Fun 2021...thanks for listening and hopefully got your support :)
