I once had a plot in a communal garden located in Fullerton, CA. The land was provided by the company where I worked. After a few seasons the land, unfortunately, was converted to a parking lot.
I understand the many requirements to create a safe and ascetically pleasing garden. I hope that our City of Redondo Beach will create several gardens; at least one in each District. There is nothing like sharing good homegrown tomatoes with Family, friends and our community. Yes, I would like a plot and happy to volunter my help.

When I heard Brianna’s presentation on Community Gardens at Councilmember Nehrenheim’s District community meeting last year, I was instantly committed to doing what I could to help make it happen, for both selfish, and environmental reasons. As a condo-dweller whose only food and flower gardening space is an overly-shady balcony, I would personally like to work a garden plot to raise food for my own household and my neighbors. Additionally, I’d like to plant native species to create habitats that would help increase the population of endemic butterflies and birds, which are declining in species and numbers. Furthermore, by placing Community Gardens in every neighborhood throughout Redondo, we’d be more fully using our existing green spaces, and providing healthful activities for kids of all ages to be outside and making our community healthier and more beautiful.
I am asking the Council to work with the SBPC committee and fully support SBPC in establishing a community garden. This has been a long-term project and ticks the boxes for expanding public open space for community uses, educating adults and children on gardening and plant life, and supporting outdoor activities and quality of life for Redondo residents at a small cost to the City. Please move forward on all levels and ensure this project finally gets done by the goal date of May 2021.
