Sadly, the poor service from the Redondo Beach USPS is not a new phenomenon. Those of us who have signed up for the service to receive advance emails regarding what's been scanned for delivery often get that daily email rife with "we have a piece of mail that wasn't available" messages. When other problems arise, such as mailboxes being destroyed by theft, it takes weeks for the Post Office to fix them and we're not allowed to do it ourselves in multi-unit dwellings. The "work-around" for that is to go to the Post Office to personally pick up mail, and that has proved to be ineffective as well ... missing mail, waiting at the counter for a long time only to be told there's no mail (when you know there is), etc. And, as Council Member Emdee mentioned, people are reliant on quick, efficient mail service for medications. Prescription insurance has changed, forcing many to receive medications by mail, without the ability to opt out. A 2 to 3 day delay in receipt of medication by mail can actually be life-threatening, and it's not always possible for those needing such medication to get a doctor to prescribe a short-term emergency supply to go to a pharmacy for pick-up. And lastly, every phone number ever provided to the citizens of Redondo Beach for whom to contact at the USPS with problems does NOT result in anyone taking the call and actually speaking with a person. We get the run-around. Again, these are not new problems due to the pandemic. The pandemic only made the poor service worse. We are frustrated and seemingly have nowhere to turn, as still seems to be the case by what the USPS representatives are explaining tonight.
In the past few months Avenue E in Redondo Beach has had the street name changed to Avenue P in the USPS Master Address File. The city of Redondo Beach did not initiated a street name change and there no Avenue P in the city of Redondo Beach.
How did this happen and how does it get corrected?
This unauthorized street name change is causing havoc for the residents of Avenue E in Redondo Beach.
Our banks, utilities, department stores, etc. have changed our mailing addresses from Avenue E to Avenue P.
Residents can no longer order merchandise or their prescriptions for home delivery. When one puts in their correct Avenue E address, the systems automatically change the street name to Avenue P.
Residents can no longer place a vacation hold on their mail because Avenue E, Redondo Beach, no longer exists in the USPS systems master address file.
Neighbors are experiencing undo delays in trying to refinance their property because lenders, appraisals can not easily verify Avenue E in Redondo Beach as the correct address. Equifax and other credit agencies have changed Avenue E addresses in their systems to Avenue P.
Residents of Avenue E now have no assurance that important documents such as Form 1099s, Bank statements, income tax refunds, stimulus checks that they usually receive my mail will reach them. Often senders of these types of documents required that they are returned to the sender if the address does not agree to their records which are automatically changing the street name from Avenue E to Avenue P.
Is it possible that when the 2020 census data was updated or uploaded to the US Master Addresses File; it somehow corrupted the Avenue E , Redondo Beach file? Seem improbable that this would happen to just one street in one city in the US. Has the USPS master mail file been hacked?
How quickly can this be fixed? Is this something that the Redondo Beach postmaster can have corrected or is this a Federal postal issue? Thank you.
