O.1. 20-1856 DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION REGARDING THE CITY'S LOCAL EMERGENCY PERTAINING TO COVID-19
CONSIDER TO ADOPT BY TITLE ONLY RESOLUTION NO. CC-2012-095, A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDONDO BEACH, CALIFORNIA, OPPOSING LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH'S BANNING OF OUTDOOR DINING AND STATE'S DECISION AS IT PERTAINS TO OUTDOOR DINING
I strongly support this resolution. The county adopted this ban despite the lack of any evidence that outside dining was contributing to the surge (by their own admission). King Harbor Yacht Club had been operating with outside dining following the county protocols. As a private club with 460 members, we actually know who is dining at the club and will likely hear when one becomes ill. I am aware of no COVID-19 cases among our members who have been dining with us. - Lee Coller, Commodore, KHYC, speaking for myself.
while i appreciate this item, no action should be taken. no draft or data or science was provided in the agenda. we are all hurting to get over this pandemic and bars/restaurants were spreading covid. frequently one can observe drinking patrons from multiple parties shouting right next to each other. this obviously spreads. aggressive use of tents further restricts air. instead of reacting, this council should form a subcommittee and be proactive with other beach cities and LACO so when it gets worse this winter/spring we are closing parking and bike paths before beaches. this council failed to do that last year and when beaches closed you remained silent.
My name is Tonya McKenzie of District 4. North Redondo Beach eateries are being hurt by this action by the governor. As the president of The North Redondo Beach Business Association, a resident, business owner and mother that is deeply concerned for the safety of the community is which I live, I have yet to see any of our businesses not taking this public health crisis seriously. Our businesses have done what was asked and continue to be diligent in keeping their customers safe and should not be punished for the actions of those that chose to disregard the damage that not following guidelines would do. These businesses have invested funds to provide a safe atmosphere to ensure continued patronage and deserve the benefit of the doubt and the benefit of our support on this issue. Outdoor dining should be able to resume ASAP.
I don't support banning outdoor dining because I believe that it causes more harm than good. That being stated, I understand why our health officials support the ban. Our hospitals are at risk of being over-run. Restaurants that have outside dining have responsibility to adhere to health guidelines and those guidelines should be strictly enforced.
