Text of letter:
Dear Mayor Brand, Christian Horvath, City Council Members, Ted Semaan, and John Larock,
We request that Franklin Park be removed from consideration as a location for a future skatepark because:
1. The skatepark would change the “Serenity” of the park to a regional park which is out of character of the neighborhood.
2. The volleyball court is currently being used extensively for mix-use including volleyball, pickleball, biking, skating, and scootering. To remove the volleyball court would mean excluding more park users of open smooth surfaces rather than skateboarders only.
3. Because Franklin Park is serene, the ambient noise would carry to both the homes that face the park on Fisk and Ralston Lanes.
4. The ambient noise from the skatepark would be detrimental to the Friendship Foundation and their mission as their business/clients need calm and quiet surroundings which a skatepark does not bring as the skatepark and Friendship Foundation facility is so close to each other.
5. Given the current Redondo Beach budget shortfall for 2020-2021 and likely for more years to come, the cost of $450,000 is excessive.
6. An alternate location from the volleyball court of the skate parks is not to be considered as that would significantly alter the “Serenity”.
7. Czuleger Park was not part of the City Council motion as a possible skatepark site, more so then that Franklin Park should be removed from consideration too.
8. The skatepark would be a better fit to the Galleria, Anderson Park, or Pad 10.
We would like to keep Franklin Park, “As is” with regular maintenance. Keep Franklin Park the serenity park as it was originally intended.
Sincerely,
